The Spring-Summer 2016 campaign ‘Mirror the World’ is about saving Venice, affected by mass tourism and rising water levels due to climate change. The designer has taken a full frontal approach (literally) to saving the sinking city, casting gay porn star Colby Keller as her latest campaign’s face. The adult entertainer has previously appeared in queer fashion designer BCALLA’s AW15 campaign, but this is his first time with the British designer.

Shot around the alleys, canals, shipyards and palazzos of Venice by renowned fashion photographer Juergen Teller, the campaign highlights the beauty and decay of Venice and the urgent need to save it. The shots capture the alarming decomposition of the ancient city, contrasting it with the landscape’s beauty and heritage.

In his interview with NewNowNext, Keller talks about how the opportunity came to him through a picture that was sent to Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s husband, by friend and fashion designer Bernhard Wilhelm. “We’d gone thrifting in LA and he snapped a pic of me in some Vivienne Westwood vintage trousers and sent the pic to Andreas.”

Vivienne Westwood has always been as much an activist as she is an iconic fashion figure, which is why it’s no surprise that the designer has chosen couture to raise awareness for environmental conservation. What is surprising is Westwood’s taboo-breaking approach to her latest campaign, with Keller not only appearing in fishnets and heels but fully nude in one shot. Despite constantly showcasing his nudity on film as an adult entertainer, Keller’s high fashion editorial nakedness brings an edgy and raw approach to the fashion campaign.

When asked what he finds appealing about Vivienne Westwood’s aesthetic, Keller told NNN that as “a nerd at heart”, he always “appreciated the historical references embedded in her work” and, as a co-activist, he’s “drawn to her . She puts a lot of thought, research and heart into every collection.”
